Aggie softball team shuts out A&M-Corpus Christi 9-0

Amanda Scarborough was 2-for-2 batting with three RBIs and was the winning pitcher as fifth-ranked Texas A&M beat A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 9-0 in nonconference softball Wednesday at the Aggie Softball Complex before 677.

A&M (32-6) scored two in the first and four more in the fourth, cruising to victory in the five-inning game that was called via the run rule.

"It's nice that our team came out here and took care of business," A&M head coach Jo Evans said. "I was very disappointed in that we didn't go seven innings, just in terms of wanting to give Emily Shadow and Lisa Gorzycki more opportunities to pitch, so that those kids can stay sharp. I really liked the business-like approach we had; we came out and did a nice job."

A&M starting pitcher Megan Gibson allowed one hit in two innings, and Scarborough matched that. Shadow pitched a hitless inning.

Sharonda McDonald doubled to start A&M's first. Macie Morrow's fielder's choice moved McDonald to third. Scarborough singled in McDonald. Morrow scored on Jamie Hinshaw grounder to second base.

A&M broke it open in the second with four singles and a triple. Alex Reynolds, Beverly Rowan, Bailey Schroeder and Gibson singled, while Scarborough tripled.

A&M added three unearned runs in the fourth without getting a hit.

Southland Conference member A&M-Corpus Christi (8-28), had singles from Erica Armenta and Stephanie Estrada.

The Aggies will be at Kansas this weekend for a two-game Big 12 series.

Baylor 6, Texas 0: AUSTIN - Baylor's Lisa Ferguson pitched a four-hit shutout to lead ninth-ranked Baylor to a 6-0 victory over the Texas Longhorns on Wednesday.

Baylor (37-9, 7-0 Big 12) scored first in the fifth on Brette Regan's bases-loaded walk against Meagan Denny (18-10). Ashley Monceaux followed with a sacrifice fly and Chelsi Lake had a two-run single.

Kelsey Sage added a solo home run in the sixth, and the Lady Bears' last run scored on a throwing error in the seventh.

Former A&M Consolidated standout Kacie Gaskin had a single for Texas (28-11, 3-5).

Streaking Baylor won at Texas last Wednesday, then took two games at Texas Tech over the weekend.

"We had some really good at-bats and Lisa threw extremely well," Baylor head coach Glenn Moore said. "To finish the road swing with a perfect record is really a credit to the team. I think they will all be excited to return home, and, hopefully, we can continue to play well."

Missouri-Kansas postponed: COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Kansas at Missouri game Wednesday was postponed by weather. The teams will play a doubleheader next Wednesday in Lawrence, Kan.
