Texas A&M pitchers Amanda Scarborough and Megan Gibson lifted the Aggie softball team to a pair of 1-0 victories over Nebraska in a brilliantly played doubleheader at the Aggie Softball Complex on Friday night. The Aggies knocked off Nebraska in the first game on their only hit, a run-scoring single by freshman Macie Morrow in the bottom of the eighth inning. Gibson (13-2) got the pitching victory with a five-hitter, out-dueling Nebraska's Molly Hill. In the second game, Gibson's hitting helped Scarborough (15-4) pick up the victory with a three-hitter on nine strikeouts. Gibson slammed a solo home run in the third inning, the school-record 40th homer of her career. The Aggies moved to 31-6 for the season and 5-3 in Big 12 action. Nebraska fell to 27-13 overall and 3-4 in league. The doubleheader, which was scheduled because of the threat of bad weather Saturday, featured two of the best pitching staffs in the league. Losing the first game dropped Hill to 12-7. The eighth-inning run by A&M shattered a Husker-record 26 1/3 consecutive innings of scoreless pitching. In the second game, Scarborough out-dueled All-Big 12 pitcher Ashley DeBuhr, who allowed four hits and struck out seven. Gibson allowed five scattered hits, but none of the runners reached third base. The winning run in the first game came in the eighth when freshman Bailey Schroeder of A&M Consolidated walked to lead off the inning, then moved to third on a groundout to the right side by Sharonda McDonald, who had a 21-game hitting streak stopped. Schroeder scored when Morrow sent a single up the middle. GAME 1: Texas A&M 1, Nebraska 0 (8 innings) GAME 2: Texas A&M 1, Nebraska 0 RECORDS: A&M (31-6, 5-3 Big 12), Nebraska (27-13, 3-4) NEXT: A&M hosts TAMU-Corpus Christi, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday Scarborough had a good duel with DeBuhr in the second game. Scarborough struck out the side in the first inning to set the tone. A runner reached third base in the second inning, but the Cornhuskers was stranded when Scarborough struck out two in a row. The Aggies had several chances to score. McDonald and Morrow led off the second game with successive singles. Gibson's long drive to the warning track in center was pulled down by center fielder Meghan Mullin, then Scarborough struck out and Jamie Hinshaw popped up to end the Aggie threat. Gibson's long homer to left-center against a strong northerly wind should have been a two-run shot. McDonald led off the inning with an infield single, stole second and third base. When the throw to third got away, McDonald tried to score, but she was nailed at the plate on a strong throw by shortstop Devin Porter. Later in the inning, Scarborough's soft liner down the line in right was hauled in on a spectacular catch by Haley Long of Brenham. Long had three hits in the two games. A&M returns to action on Wednesday in a single game against the Islanders of Texas A&M- Corpus Christi. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Aggie Softball Complex.
