Gibson, Aggies blank Bobcats

SAN MARCOS - Freshman Mandy Gegen went 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs and Megan Gibson pitched a three-hitter as the third-ranked Texas A&M softball team beat the Texas State Bobcats, 5-0, on Wednesday night.

The Aggies improved to 26-3 on the season, while the Bobcats fell to 15-17.

"I'm really pleased with the way our team played tonight," A&M coach Jo Evans said. "I thought we were running on all cylinders. I thought we were very sharp defensively and very aggressive offensively, which is nice to see. Gibson, of course, was great. Overall it was a great night for us."

After Gibson and Amanda Scarborough reached on singles, Gegen blasted her first collegiate home run to give the Aggies a 3-0 advantage in the second inning. Gegen got her fourth RBI of the game in the fifth inning with a double off the left-field wall. Scarborough reached base on a two-out walk and moved to second on a single by Reynolds.

"Mandy Gegen was great tonight," Evans said. "It was nice to see the freshman step up in some key situations and get a couple of timely hits."

Gibson (10-1) pitched her third shutout of the season. She struck out six and walked two.

With her bunt single in the fourth, Sharonda McDonald extended her hitting streak to 15 games.

The Aggies will host Iowa State at 2 p.m. Saturday to open Big 12 play.
