Recruits can feel those coaching hot seats

Published Thursday, October 25, 2007

D.J. Woods, an Ohio wide receiver orally committed to Nebraska, hasn't heard from Cornhuskers coaches in weeks. He can only imagine what kind of mood they must be in by now.

The last time he talked to any of Nebraska's assistants, Woods told The Lincoln Journal Star, "Their voices just sound depressed, like they know they're going to get fired. In the back of my head, I kind of know the coaching staff is going to be gone.

"I'm just trying to figure out who the next coach is going to be."

Bennett eyes NFL scenario

Published Wednesday, October 24, 2007

After a month-long silence, Martellus Bennett met with reporters at Texas A&M's weekly media luncheon Tuesday. He said he simply "took a break like Tiger Woods."

The loquacious tight end cracked wise as usual. But Bennett turned serious at one point and said he'll likely jump into the NFL Draft this April if he's considered a first- or second-round pick.

"You've got to get out while you're hot," Bennett said. "That's what I told Reggie [Bush]."

McGee's impersonation of Lane not bad

Published Wednesday, October 24, 2007

Three days after Stephen McGee ran the football like a 277-pound tailback, he was still stealing Jorvorskie Lane's thunder.

McGee had 35 carries for a career-high 167 yards rushing in Texas A&M's 36-14 victory over Nebraska on Saturday. On most of those carries, Nebraska keyed on Lane, who made sure his quarterback knew the Husker ends - 265-pound Barry Turner and 285-pound Zach Potter - were taking free shots at him while McGee kept the ball on A&M's zone read.

McGee just smiled at Tuesday's press conference when asked about it, mimicking Lane's high-pitched frustration in the huddle Saturday.

Kansas gets most out of talent

If Kansas head football coach Mark Mangino subscribes to a recruiting service, he does it for laughs.

Kansas is the only unbeaten team in the Big 12 Conference, and Mangino has done it without a signing class rated higher than 38th in the country by Rivals.com.

The core of KU's 7-0 team comes from the 2004 signing class, which was rated 51st in the country and only 11th in the Big 12.

Aggies have chance to write a happy ending

Tom Osborne was all smiles before the game Saturday, but it was Bill Byrne who was beaming afterward.

The legendary Osborne coached Nebraska to three national championships, strengthening the legacy that Bob Devaney started. Now the 70-year-old Osborne has accepted the responsibility to return the football program to excellence. He became the school's interim athletic director Tuesday, and by kickoff Saturday against Texas A&M the school's 288th consecutive sellout crowd had mentally put the rocky regime of fired athletic director Steve Pederson behind it.

The buzz inside Memorial Stadium because of Osborne's return seemed to permeate throughout the sea of red. Thousands of red and white balloons were released when Quentin Castille scored to give Nebraska a 7-6 lead.

LINCOLN, Neb. - On Tom Osborne's first Saturday as Nebraska's interim athletic director, he saw the kind of gritty quarterback play that helped him win three national championships during a legendary coaching career with the Cornhuskers.

Osborne's problem was that the quarterback was running through his Huskers instead of leading them.

Texas A&M's Stephen McGee had a career-high 167 yards rushing to lead the Aggies to a 36-14 Big 12 Conference victory at Memorial Stadium before 84,473 red-clad fans.

Looking in the mirror

Published Saturday, October 20, 2007

Texas A&M will try to regain its winning touch against the once-proud Nebraska Cornhuskers, who lately have been treating opponents better than a Holiday Inn Express.

And A&M could use some TLC after a 35-7 loss at Texas Tech, the second time this season the Aggies have been blown out on the road. But that's mild compared to the free fall by the mighty Huskers, who are college football's winningest program since 1970, but this year are candidates for the Bottom 10.

Nebraska has allowed 40 points in four games for the first time in the school's 118-year history. The Cornhuskers are 104th in total defense, allowing 457 yards per game. Ball State rolled up 610 yards against Nebraska a month ago, but the Cornhuskers escaped with a 41-40 victory when Ball State missed a 55-yard field goal.

A&M's run game vs. Nebraska's run defense: Quarterback Stephen McGee (85 carries-544 yards) and tailbacks Jorvorskie Lane (102 carries-445 yards) and Mike Goodson (88 carries-433 yards) have to be trying hard not to smile. Nebraska allows 208.6 yards rushing per game, which is 106th in the country. Nebraska has allowed four 100-yard rushing efforts and one 200-yard effort. Nebraska allowed Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel 72 yards rushing on 11 carries, and McGee is 10 times the rusher that Daniel is. "We're going to do everything we can to mix up everything we can to attack [A&M's offense]," NU head coach Bill Callahan said. "We've got to attack this offense and attack it in a fashion that is unique and different." A&M senior offensive guard Chris Yoder was hurt last week, and he could be replaced by sophomore Michael Shumard. Starting offensive tackle Yemi Babalola has missed the last three games. Elder's a mainstay for Ags' offensive line

Guard Kirk Elder has been a mainstay in the Texas A&M offensive line for more than three years. The 6-foot-5, 308-pounder has started 43 straight games and received multiple all-Big 12 honors. As a member of A&M's Leadership Council, Elder is the ultimate team player and is a big reason the offensive line is a family within a family among the Aggies. Elder addresses what is the biggest game of the season for A&M, and not just because it's the next game.

Nunn makes habit of taking on records

Terrence Nunn's name will be mentioned along with Heisman Trophy-winner and Nebraska legend Johnny Rodgers on many occasions this season.

Of the two most significant Nebraska career receiving records held by Rogers, Nunn, a senior from Cy-Falls, is on target to eclipse one and close the gap significantly while finishing second in another.

"I think about it sometimes but I try not to let it get in the way," Nunn said earlier this season. "It's a great honor to be mentioned in the same sentence with Johnny Rodgers. It's just outstanding to know that I'm close to breaking his record."
